1 〔(人が)我慢できない〕 cannot [be unable to] bear [stand, put up with, endure, abide, stick, 《口》 take, 《口》 live with, 《口》 swallow, 《口》 stomach]; lose patience with….

●酷使[侮辱]に耐えかねる cannot take being exploited [insulted]

・良心の呵責に耐えかねる be unable to ignore the pricking of one's conscience; be unable to live with a guilty conscience

・重圧[緊張, 孤独]に耐えかねる be unable to bear [stand] (the) pressure [strain, loneliness].

●都会の暑さに耐えかね山の避暑地にでかけた. Unable to stand [《英》 《口》 stick] the heat of the city, we took off for a mountain resort.

・空腹に耐えかねて盗みをはたらいた. She was forced to steal because she couldn't endure being (constantly) hungry.

・痛みに耐えかねて彼の口からうめき声が漏れた. A groan escaped from his mouth when he could no longer tolerate the pain.

・夫の暴力に耐えかねて彼女は家を出た. No longer able to stand her husband's violence, she left home [walked out on him].

・費用の負担に耐えかねて数社がその事業から撤退した. A number of firms have been unable to shoulder the cost burden and left the field [business].

2 〔(物が)もたない〕 give way; give out; collapse; fall apart [to pieces]; cave in.

●本の重さに耐えかねて床が抜けた. The floor gave way under the weight of the books.

・長年の酷使に耐えかね, わが家の掃除機がついに壊れた. Our vacuum cleaner has finally succumbed to years of punishment and broken down.
